The Loft Floor
Splitting each log in half gave us a flat surface to work with. It takes an axe, several wedges, and a splitting maul.
We cut down several straight oak and ash trees and split them in half for boards.
Most of them turned out not so straight! In this picture from Spring 2005, they still need lots of work.
An adze was used to flatten both sides of the ash boards. This tool was our Grandpa's, and his brother Emmanuel made an oak handle for us.
Making pegs for the floor. We counted over 80 pegs in the finished floor.
Some of the pegs and other tools used in making the floor. The entire floor is held
in place by wooden pegs. We haven't used a single nail in the cabin yet!
Our sister Bethany helps pound in the last floor peg.
The floor was finished on August 11, 2005.
